Everyone is different. The clothes, books, computer games, and activities you like are part of what makes you one of a kind. Smart eatin’ is making the choices that are right for you.

Your food choices also make you different. You might love graham crackers, but your sister likes chocolate chip cookies. You’re both going to have to find your balance in different ways. Read more to find out how MyPyramid for Kids can help you be a smart eater.

How do I understand the MyPyramid graphic?

The colors orange, green, red, yellow, blue and purple represent the five different food groups plus oils. You need a variety of foods from all five groups because they all provide different nutrients. You need milk products to get enough calcium, and fruits and vegetables to get vitamins A and C. You get protein and B vitamins from the meat and beans group, and the grains group is loaded with fiber.

Not all foods are created equal! There are some foods that have more nutrients than others. Not only are they better for you, but you can eat more of them than low-nutrient foods. They’re called “power foods.” Power foods fuel your body so your brain and muscles can do their best.
